Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MAC-V) was founded in 1990 with a mission to end homelessness for those who once served our country. MidCountry’s donation will help fund programs that place homeless veterans in transitional group housing while case workers help them with individualized plans to gain stability and eventual independence.
Since its inception, the efforts of MAC-V have effectively cut our homeless veteran population in half in the state, but the need is still great. Though the numbers of documented homeless are in a decline, the longer term cases are more complex. Additionally, there is a new trend emerging as the military becomes more gender diverse. Homeless women are a segment of the veteran registry that requires attention as well. On average, the transition period from homelessness lasts 6-9 months. MAC-V also facilitates regional “Stand Down” events that bring all of the resources together in one location to help improve access to the services these veterans need.
MAC-V is an organization comprised of approximately 50 individuals dedicated to its cause. Over half are retired military personnel themselves. The others that are not are from various non-profit or service sectors that provide invaluable contacts and skill sets to navigate the government, legal and public/private resources necessary to solve this important issue.
